Earth The Power Of The Planet 720p

Episode 1 - Volcanoes

There's a lot to dislike about Dr Iain Stewart, the lecturer who has made himself into TV's Mr Geology: his earnest, shouty delivery, his fatal fondness for the word "ironically", his hair. But with this whopper of a series Stewart has pulled off the near impossible: made a gripping, dramatic, inspiring programme about rocks. It's about more than rocks, of course. It's about the origins of life on Earth and the forces that moulded our planet. It's big-picture stuff, with soaring shots of mountain ranges and lava lakes but also the odd 3-D diagram, too, to show how, say, subduction volcanos work (more interesting than it sounds). Volcanos are the heroes of tonight's programme and the story is of how the heat trapped inside the Earth when it formed four-and-a-half billion years ago (get used to the big numbers, there are lots of them) has played a vital role ever since. It's a fascinating story, told in a way that might just persuade older children to watch, too.

Episode 2 - The Atmosphere

Dr Iain Stewart's promises so loudly. "Tornados are like giant whirlpools!" he gasps dramatically. But the remark is accompanied by amazing footage that confirms just that. Then: "We live at the bottom of an ocean of air!" But who'd disagree after seeing the shots of clouds swirling over the Earth's surface like waves breaking on the shore? The globetrotting Stewart is examining the Earth's atmosphere - how it shapes our planet, creates our weather and what its relationship with life is. It's breathtaking, racing from one sensational sequence to another. You simply won't believe the acrobatics of an "air surfer", the spectacular lightning show in Argentina and the pillar of flame shooting up out of a frozen Siberian lake (it's fuelled by trapped methane gas, in case you were wondering).

Episode 3 - Ice

I've worked out what worries me about Dr Iain Stewart, presenter of this stirring geography show. He's oddly reminiscent of The Thick of It's vicious spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker: the same Scottish accent and aquiline features. Except Stewart is far from vicious; he's unsettlingly nice, with a big toothy smile and a seemingly bottomless well of enthusiasm. And as it turns out, seemingly bottomless wells are a part of tonight's story, the wells hollowed out in glaciers by meltwater. No-one knows what happens at the far bottom of these rather beautiful holes, but whatever it is, the glaciers are melting at a rate of knots. To a geologist, that's nothing new. Ice has advanced and retreated across the Earth 50 times in its history, it seems, although in the great scheme of things it's unusual; for 90 per cent of Earth's history there was no ice around. When it was around, it shaped the landscape in huge ways, a story Stewart tells well.

Epsiode 4 - The Oceans

This week, Dr Iain Stewart is getting overexcited about oceans, racking up a scarily large number of air miles as he exclaims and enthuses over the power of water in different parts of the world. Oceans, he tells us (or rather shouts at us), are more than just huge reservoirs of water - their brute force has transformed the planet, carving out our coastlines, transferring energy round the globe and driving the climate. The film is an odd mix of the surreal and the sensational: the footage of Stewart bobbing about the ocean bed on a sort of bright yellow bubblecar-cum- scooter will make you hoot with laughter, while the sight of an enormous crystal cave reminiscent of the White Witch's palace in Narnia is breathtakingly beautiful. "Conditions in the world's oceans have barely changed since human beings have walked on the planet," he concludes reassuringly, before delivering the coup de grâce: "until now!"

Episode 5 - Rare Earth

Geography series with Dr Iain Stewart. Our planet is unique within the solar system. Four-and-a-half billion years ago it had a 'twin' named Theia which was absorbed into the Earth, increasing its gravity and allowing it to form an atmosphere. Iain travels to Meteor Crater in Arizona to explore the atmosphere's role in protecting us from bombardment by meteorites. Life on earth only prospers because it is provided with right amount of heat from the sun
